Outside the old cottage in Ireland,
at my home away from home.
Hi there!
I'm Candice, the artist and creator of the Wren and Snail Post.
I grew up on a small farm in the Ottawa Valley, a region of Canada settled largely by Irish and Scottish immigrants who carried their traditions across the ocean and into the land. Something of that lineage was already living in me long before I had language for it, in the way the seasons felt significant, and in the way the land and animals spoke to you if you were quiet enough to listen.
... also for me, having a Dad who was very proud of our Scottish lineage, and who took my sister and I each year to the Highland Games... with bagpipes in your ears for days later, it was deeply ingrained.
I come from two Celtic lines, Irish and Scottish, and it is from this side of my heritage that I draw my practice. My Germanic maternal lineage runs equally deep and shapes who I am, but it is the Celtic tradition and the Wheel of the Year that has become the compass to my life.
This path found me early. In my teens I began traveling back to Ireland and Scotland, feeling the land beneath my feet like a homecoming. Receiving a few sentences from a wee old magic man outside a Dublin pub changed something in me permanently, I never caught his name, but his words lit the path forward. Later I had the honour of undertaking my year and a day journey in Toronto with Deirdre Norman, and in recent years I have been deeply inspired by the teachings of Mari Kennedy of the Next Stage Celtic Wheel, alongside whom I have had the privilege of working. 🌿 There are many others, and as time goes, i'll add a reading list of my favourites.
And suffice it to say, these musing I will share in the Wren and Snail Post, are all passed down, through books, mentors, and experiences. I won't always have the same information that you may, but this is a part of my life, and my path of learning, which, like the wheel is a continuous journey.
The Wren and Snail Post was born from a simple longing to slow down, to create something tangible and beautiful, to offer a genuine pause in a world that rarely stops.
A letter in your hand.
A moon to mark.
A season to honour.
My presence online will be minimal and this is intentionally so. What I'm building is rooted in the offline and the unhurried. Each element that goes into your envelope is hand made with care and intention, and that work asks for my time and presence in the physical world and creative, rather than the digital one. You'll find me occasionally on Instagram, but mostly I'll be here, writing to you, one envelope at a time.
I'd like to welcome you to The Wren and Snail Post. I'm so glad you found your way here. 🐦🐌
